Twenty years ago, authors who took the self-publishing route were few and far between. But the publishing has changed and today thousands of authors take this route every year. And some of them have experienced monumental success. Here are five you’ve definitely heard about–though you might not have known they were self-published.

50 Shades of Grey, by E. L. James

Without a doubt one of the biggest bestselling novels in recent years, Fifty Shades of Grey was self-published in 2011. Its ensuing fame and success attracted the attention of publishing houses and production studios, and James’ trilogy was soon picked up by the publishing giant Penguing Random House, and later adapted for the screen. In only eighteen months, the book sold forty million copies.

The Riyria Chronicles, by Michael J. Sullivan

The Riyria Chronicles is a six-book series that has been translated into fourteen languages. The author, Michael J. Sullivan, is one of the most popular science-fiction authors in the world. His first book, The Crown Tower, sold seventy thousand copies before Sullivan’s was signed by a publishing house.

Still Alice, by Lisa Genova

Lisa Genova published Still Alice in 2007, two years before signing on with Simon & Schuster. The book has been translated into twenty-five languages and has also been adapted for the screen.

The Celestine Prophecy, by James Redfield

James Redfield self-published his novel in 1993 and successfully sold 100,000 copies on his own. The book was later taken on by Warner Books. To this day the book has sold over two hundred and twenty million copies.

The Wealthy Barber, by David Chilton

Published in 1989, The Wealthy Barber offers readers financial planning advice. To this day it remains one of the biggest bestsellers in Canada. Chilton has gone on to be one of the dragons on the famous TV show, Dragon’s Den.
